FIRST THINGS FIRST.

If you have never owned a Siberian Husky but desperately want one, there are a few things you must do before you make your mind up that this is the breed for you.

  • First ensure you read everything you can about the breed, go onto the Scottish Siberian Husky Club & Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain websites.
  • Can you maintain the level of exercise that this breed requires? (if you like sitting in an armchair at the end of the evening , then this is not the breed for you).
  • Do you mind that you can NEVER LET A SIBERIAN OFF LEAD ? (if you want a dog that you can let roam free on a walk and come when called, then this is not the breed for you).
  • Would you mind your garden being dug up, your house being chewed, your trainers/phone/mp3's being chewed ?(this can happen, not always but if they are not exercised enough or are bored and left alone for long periods, then they can become destructive, sometimes they chew things just for fun, then this is not the breed for you).
  • Would you/your neighbors be ok with howling? if not then this is not the breed for you.
  • Do you have small animals in the house?, bare in mind that Siberian Huskies have a high prey drive and will look on small animals as food and probably will kill them.

The above statements might seem a bit dramatic but they are/can be true.  Siberian huskies are not like your average dog, they were bred to pull and so they have a high energy level, they were let loose in the summer months to fend for themselves and so they have a high predatory instinct, they can become easily bored and will find ways to entertain themselves by digging and shredding anything they can get their hands on.  They howl to communicate and for fun, to hear their own voice.

They are the most loving and entertaining breed that i have ever came across and with this in mind i know i will never go back to other breeds but just because i am addicted to them, you might not be.  I have totally changed my life to fit in with my dogs, gone is the spotless wellkept house and in it's place are couches chewed and scored by husky teeth & paws, a kitchen that is head high in sleeping crates (i like my dogs to be in at night) running gear, plastic boxes with all the dogs toys/gear. Food cabinet now has all the dogs natural food stocks to go with the freezer full of raw meat/chicken.  The back yard has two descent sized runs and the rest is their play area.  We go running four times a week in the cooler months, which can then  increase to five/six times at the height of the rally season and up until 3 months ago, we either did showing/rallies/exercising the full weekend.

You might think i am mad or you might think i am sad but this is my life and i LOVE IT, if you are not prepared to change your life to fit in with the requirements of this breed (THEN THIS IS NOT THE BREED FOR YOU).
